Challenger Transmissions History:
The 42RLE, a 4-spd auto developed by Chrysler, was the only auto trans available for 3.5L V6 for ’09. The 42RLE is an upgraded 42LE, modified for rear drive. The 42RLE uses 3 planetary gear sets, one overrunning clutch, is electronically controlled. The converter has electronically controlled clutch to aid shock absorption under hard shifting & WOT. Overhaul fill capacity is 8.8 qts (8.3L).

42RLE: Light-duty, outdated, dropped in ’09, W5A580 was only available automatic.

NAG1: Mercedez-Benz WA580 automatic was available paired to 5.7L or 6.1L V8 in ’08. Beginning in ’09, became the only auto trans available in Challenger, mated to both V6 & V8s. With a max torque capacity of 430 ft-lbs, the WA580 is an electronically controlled trans with a lock-up torque converter, adaptive electronic control, & manual shift mode. Hydraulic pressures still actuate the gears, shift pressures are controlled via transmission control module & electronic solenoids & valves, to allow greater precision, smoother, faster, more reliable shifting. NAG1, New Automatic Gearbox (Generation) One. The WA580 is slow shifting, but can still shift faster than a manual trans. Very sensitive to fluid quality & quantity, even small amounts of moisture can cause the clutches to act up.

ZF 845RE, 8HP70, 8HP90: New in ’15 was 2nd gen ZF 845RE, 8HP70, & 8HP90 8-speed. These 2nd gen 8-speeds can be fitted to any engine, can shift non-sequential, have shift time as low as 200 ms, wider ratio spread, reduced oil pump pressure, a decrease in shift drag, adaptive electronic control, which changes the behavior of the transmission to match the driver, & paddle shifted via a manual driver interactive control mode.

845RE has lowest torque capacity & fitted to 3.6L Pentastar.

8HP70 is std for 5.7L & 6.4L, torque capacity 520 ft-lbs.

8HP90, rated at 665 ft-lbs & standard on SRT Demon, reliable & w/o any major faults, as long as it is serviced properly at required intervals. There is no longer a dipstick, it must be done with a scan tool & the filter is integral to trans fluid pan, you must change the pan.

Tremec TR-6060: Based on T56, TR-6060 is a close-ratio geared, die-cast aluminum 6-speed. Compared to the T56, the synchronizer hubs have been narrowed to reduce shift travel & synchronizer material has been upgraded to carbon particle paper to improve shift performance. Forward gears are helical cut & synchronized. 1-4 skip shift is integrated to reduce driver shifting when loafing around. The most common complaint is shifting notchiness or complete blockage when attempting to shift 1st to 2nd in full throttle conditions. It’s important that transmission fluid is at the proper capacity 3.45 qts Mopar ATF 4.
